The African Centre for the Study and Research on Migration assists African Member States and Regional Economic Communities in strengthening migration governance consistent with international standards and laws through a whole-of-government approach and a whole-of-society approach.

It is fundamental to strengthen migration governance to ensure safe, orderly, and dignified migration. Enhanced migration governance can contribute to addressing the increasing vulnerability of migrants to exploitation, abuses, human rights violations, trafficking, and smuggling of migrants. A human rights-based approach to migration governance consistent with international instruments can foster the protection of the human rights of migrants, migrants’ access to healthcare, social welfare, and other basic services, thereby contributing to the socioeconomic well-being of migrants. It helps to address the migration-related challenges faced by origin, transit, and destination countries. Enhanced migration governance can contribute to protecting migrant’s rights and addressing the migration dimensions of crises.

The Global Compact on Migration (GCM), the AU (i.e., the African Union Migration Policy Framework), and international instruments (such as the United Nations Convention for the Protection of Migrant Workers and their Families and the ILO Convention related to migration) call for strengthening migration governance to address the challenges related to migration per the international standards and laws.
